An exposition about the life and scientific work of Yuri Cherkashov has been opened at the Information-Analytical Center of Kursk NPP

An exposition about the life and scientific work of Yuri Cherkashov, the chief designer of channel-type reactors RBMK-1000 and RBMK-1500, was opened at the Information-Analytical Center of Kursk Nuclear Power Plant on Dec 19. The exposition presents documents, photos and other materials about the life and work of Cherkashov. Earlier, the IAC has organized expositions about Igor Kurchatov and Tom Nikolayev.

It was the initiative of the director general of the Research and Development Institute of Power Engineering (NIKIET) Boris Gabarayev and the management of Kursk NPP. While opening the exposition, the deputy director general of Rosenergoatom-the director of Kursk Nuclear Power Plant Yuri Slepokon said: “Yuri Cherkashov has mage a great contribution to the development of the national nuclear power industry. Due to his research activities, the channel-type reactors have become safer and ecologically cleaner.”

After the Chernobyl accident, Cherkashov began to actively modernize RBMK reactors and to improve their safety. For Kursk NPP the name of Cherkashov is especially dear as he is the designer of one of the plant’s reactors. He also took part in the launch of the plant’s first units.

The exposition has become a kind of present to all residents of Kurchatov on the occasion of the Day of Power Engineer.

The opening ceremony was attended by representatives of NIKIET, VNIIAES, Kurchatov Institute, Atomenergoproekt, veterans and managers of Kursk NPP who personally knew Cerkashov. They remembered not only moments from his working activities (designing, construction and launch of channel-type reactors at Russian nuclear power plants) but also interesting episodes from his life. They pointed out his high professional and personnel qualities, his kind and caring attitude towards his colleagues and friends, his hard and scrupulous work to make RBMK reactors better.

Today, Russian nuclear researchers continue the cause of Cherkashov. Particularly, together with Canadian specialists, they are improving the safety of channel-type reactors.
