Cossacks killed during repressions remembered in prayer

The management of Volgodonsk NPP have attended a prayer in memory of Cossacks killed during repressions

During a liturgy in the Cathedral of the Don Icon of Our Lady on Jan 24 2008 a group of managers of Volgodonsk Nuclear Power Plant, led by the director of the plant A.Palamarchuk, the mayor of Volgodonsk as well as Volgodonsk Cossacks and residents commemorated the Cossacks killed during repressions.
 
It was not a coincidence that the liturgy was held in the Cathedral of the Don Icon of Our Lady. The Don Cossacks worship that icon. In the end, Father Sergiy Sklyarenko proposed holding such liturgies every year “so, we could ask Our Lord to save their souls.”

On Jan 24 1918 Trotsky and Sverdlov decreed to kill all rich Cossacks and those who fought against Bolsheviks. The Don Cossacks resisted and were severely repressed: over 1,500,000 Don Cossacks were killed so they could no more oppose the Soviet regime. In 1920 there were almost no Cossacks in the Don region. On Mar 25 1920 the Soviet authorities officially decreed to deprive the remaining Cossacks of their lands. 

On Jan 24 2008 all cathedrals of Rostov region commemorated the killed Cossacks.
