Conference on nuclear energy has taken place at Cosmonautics School of Zheleznogorsk

Over 100 schoolchildren from all over Krasnoyarsk region presented their projects and reports on radiation safety and decontamination. The best reports were granted certificates. Students of Tomsk Polytechnic University took part in the conference.

“I liked the reports. Those children are very clever and competent in the problems of ecology, safety and radiation. I was afraid that they would say: “Lets build lots of new reactors,” but their reports were well balanced as far as safety was concerned,” the executive director of the Ecological Union of Krasnoyarsk Region Nikolay Zubov said.

During a roundtable the children were able to ask questions to leading experts, particularly, the director general of Chemical Mining Combine Pyotr Gavrilov, professors of Tomsk Polytechnic University. The key concern of the children was whether the development of the nuclear power industry could prevent the destruction of the ozone layer.

Gavrilov said that nuclear power plants could actually solve the problem of greenhouse effect. “French scientists have calculated that we should build 200,000 reactors worldwide in order to prevent the destruction of the ozone layer,” Gavrilov said.

During an exhibition, the children presented their works: models of airplanes, tanks and ships.
