On Mar 4 2008 Kursk NPP will host a planned command and staff emergency response exercise
On Feb 26 2008 Kursk NPP is planning to conduct a preparatory exercise.
The conduct of emergency response exercises is an inalienable component of the safety policy of any nuclear power plant. Such exercises are conducted every year. Their key objective is to improve the plants’ actions for protecting their personnel and the people living in the nearby cities and villages.
During the planned exercise, the trainees will respond to a staged emergency at one of the units and will learn how to effectively interact with their colleagues at all levels. The exercise is supposed to test the preparedness of the local authorities and the personnel of the plant to respond to an emergency as well as to check up the efficiency of relevant equipment and communications systems.
During the exercise, the units of the plant will be operating at full capacity. The training will have no influence on their work.
The exercise will cover not only Kursk NPP and its safety and control facilities but also the territory of Kurchatov, Ivanino and local facilities.
The exercise will involve the radiation control stations situated in the plant’s monitoring zone, decontamination and sanitary groups deployed at Kurchatovavtotrans car wash, the local bath house, the personnel and equipment of Kursk NPP as well as the fire unit #3.
The trainees will use different means of alarm, communication and transportation as well as fire trucks and other special vehicles to be deployed in the territory of Kursk NPP, Kurchatov and nearby settlements.
The administration of Kursk NPP is asking the residents of Kurchatov and Kurchatov district to be calm and understanding. The conduct of emergency response exercise is a component of the plant’s normal activities and is stipulated by its regulating documents.
