8 tons of young silver fish was released into the cooling pond of unit 5 of Novovoronezh NPP on Feb 27
The action was part of the environment protection program of Novovoronezh Nuclear Power Plant.
Ecologically, this is the most effective method of biological melioration. In warm cooling ponds thriving vegetation and shellfish impede the work of the water well pumps by blocking their protective grids. Phytovorous species of fish, like silver carp, eat the vegetation and neutralize their negative effects. They also stop the development of phytoplankton and improve the quality of the water.
Annual release of fish into the cooling pond allows preserving its ecology. The recent tests of its water have shown that such a policy is effective.
Over 80 tons of baby fish have been released into the ponds of Novovoronezh NPP in the last 14 years.
Experts say that in the first year silver fish gets 14 times bigger, in the second year – 7 times bigger. So, imagine what fish you may catch in a couple of years!
