Members of Youth Parliament of Angarsk visit AECC

24.03.2008 // Press service of AECC

A group of members of the Youth Parliament of Angarsk visited AECC on Mar 20

The visit was part of the project “Angarsk Electrolytic Chemical Combine: Formula of Success,” aimed at familiarizing the youth of Angarsk with AECC and helping them to choose profession.

Technical Director of AECC Sergey Koshelev welcomed the guests. He told them about the plant and its projects. Particularly, this autumn AECC is planning to launch a Kedr system for processing of depleted uranium hexafluoride. The project will cost 600mln RUR with half of the sum to be spent on ecological estimates.

Koshelev told the guests about AECC’s unique gas centrifuge technology. He said that many countries had tried to create centrifuges but only Russia, the UK and Germany had succeeded in the matter.

Then, Koshelev showed the guests the uranium isotope separation production and the Chelnok hexafluoride processing system. The young parliamentarians saw how AECC stores depleted uranium hexafluoride, visited the plant’s central laboratory and were allowed to measure the radiation background at the plant. The meter showed 14–15 mRh.

After the visit the guests exchanged views. They were unanimous that when one sees production processes with his own eyes and receives convincing answers to his questions about industrial and ecological safety, he stops fearing or doubting. The chairman of the Youth Parliament Andrey Denisov said that the modern youth seek to get objective first-hand information and to see everything with their own eyes. He said that AECC’s was highly technological modern plant and Angarsk could be proud of having such an enterprise.

One of the guests said that the visit had convinced him that the speculations on AECC were leading the public away from more important ecological problems in the region.
