The results of the 2nd Winter Sports Contest “Polar Nucleus 2008” were summed up on Mar 23
Two teams of Rosenergoatom Concern and teams of Lokomotiv sports society, Kola Mining Company, Atomsport, Kandalaksha Aluminum Plant – over 180 sportsmen – took part in the contest.
Even though this year the geography of the contest enlarged, the favorites were the teams of the agri-industrial complex and the two teams of Rosenergoatom.
In ski races and polyathlon the sportsmen of the agri-industrial complex were stronger with Rosenergoatom-1 and Rosenergoatom-2 finishing the second and third, respectively.
But in slalom the sportsmen of Rosenergoatom were unsurpassed. The teams of Atomsport from Sarov and the miners from Monchegorsk (Kola Mining Company) were the second and the third, respectively.
In snow football the team of Mochegorsk was the favorite, while in rink bandy it was hard to predict the winner. As a result of uncompromising battles, Rosenergoatom won the gold medal leaving the teams of Kandalaksha and Monchegorsk with silver and bronze.
Everybody pointed out that the contest was organized very well. The chief referee of the contest, the vice chairman of Sports Committee of Murmansk region Vladimir Lebedev said:
“You can hardly find so well-equipped sports facility anywhere else in Murmansk region. The contest was perfectly organized, all the sportsmen were in excellent form and we, the referees, tried to be a worthy match to them. I think we did our job well.”
Over 5,000 people came to see the events. The most active supporters were granted special prizes. But the biggest achievement of “Polar Nucleus 2008” was the participation of children as supporters and assistants. In his final speech, the chairman of the organizing committee, the director of Kola Nuclear Power Plant Yuri Kolomtsev thanked all the sportsmen for being an excellent example for the growing generation.
