WANO technical support mission on personnel training has been conducted at Smolensk NPP
WANO technical support mission “Efficiency of Personnel Training System” was conducted at Smolensk Nuclear Power Plant on Mar 7-Apr 11 2008. A similar mission was conducted at the plant in Apr 2005. The objective of the new mission was to check up how Smolensk NPP fulfilled the recommendations of the previous one, to inspect the plant’s personnel training system and to work out proposals for its further improvement.
The mission was organized by the Moscow and Atlanta centers of WANO. The mission comprised the director for operations training of Exelon Nuclear LLC (the United States) Russell George Coon, the technical manager of WANO Atlanta Center Timothy James Martin and the coordinator of the technical support mission program of WANO Moscow Center Anatoly Chukharev.
The experts interviewed the managers and specialists of the training center and the key technological departments of Smolensk NPP and observed theoretical lessons at the training center and an emergency exercise at the reactor control panel simulator.
In conclusion, Coon presented the personnel training system of Exelon Nuclear LLC.
The experts pointed out that since the last mission Smolensk NPP has done quite big work to improve its personnel training system but the best experience shows that there is still much room for improvement. They stressed the importance of active exchange of experience. Coon invited representatives of the Training Center of Smolensk NPP to visit Exelon Nuclear LLC in the framework of WANO technical visit exchange program.
