Vitaly Kostin
(1939–2008)
Kostin was born on Mar 15 1939. He graduated from Gorky Polytechnic Institute. He was candidate of science (engineering). In 1962 he started to work at OKBM. In 1960s-1980s he was the senior designer of the bureau and took an active part in the designing, testing, production, installation and operation of equipment for nuclear reactors used by the navy and Russian and CIS nuclear power plants.
As general designer of OKBM (starting from 1986), Kostin supervised the project to design equipment for innovative reactors for ships and nuclear power plants and equipment of general industrial use developed by OKBM in the framework of the conversion of the industry. In 1997 Kostin was appointed as the first deputy director-chief engineer of OKBM. Due to his active efforts, OKBM preserved its unique scientific and industrial capacities and successfully implemented a program to develop its experimental and production capabilities. As a result, in 2000–2002 the bureau obtained a number of big contracts for production and supply of a wide variety of reactor equipment for the Russian navy and nuclear power plants built in Russia and abroad.
In 2003–2008 Kostin was the director-general designer of OKBM. In Jan 2008 he was appointed as the research manager of the bureau.
Kostin was laureate of the State Prize of USSR and Honored Machine Builder of the Russian Federation. Among his awards were Medal “300 Years of the Russian Fleet,” Badge “Veteran of Nuclear Industry,” Certificate of Honor of the Ministry of Atomic Energy of Russia, the Order of Honor, the “Friendship” International Prize of the State Council of China for active participation in the design of China Experimental Fast Reactor (CEFR), the Prize of the Government of Russia in the field of science and engineering in 2007.
Kostin passed away on Apr 17 2008.
