Representatives of NUCLECO (Italy) visited Kola NPP on Apr 22–23 in the framework of TACIS soft assistance program

NUCLECO is the leader in the field of radioactive waste treatment. The soft assistance program envisages the conduct of consultations and the exchange of experience on specific subjects. The subject of the past meeting was radioactive waste.

The head of the Radioactive Waste Department of Kola NPP Mikhail Stakhiv says that the Italians came to examine the plant’s experience and to make recommendations on how to improve its work.

NUCLECO has really big experience of radioactive waste treatment and enjoys relevant monopoly in Italy. It treats radioactive waste of not only nuclear but also medical and civil sectors. It also deals with research reactors. So, the parties have what to learn from each other.

The past visit was the first stage of the project — collection of information. The Italians inspected the plant’s radioactive waste treatment complex and its unique technologies. The first recommendations are expected to be received this summer. Particularly, they will contain advice on how to use new equipment, procedures and methods for treatment of liquid and solid radioactive waste and how to create a relevant database.
