The public has approved the activities of Bilibino NPP

Public hearings “The Ecological Safety of the Work of Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant to Collect, Use, Treat, Transport and Store Its Hazardous Waste” took place at Bilibino Children’s Arts School on Apr 25 2008. The hearings were organized by Bilibino NPP and were a part of the plant’s program to analyze its possible negative effects on the environment and to work out measures for preventing or reducing them.

The committee of the public hearings was chaired by the chairman of the Council of Deputies of Bilibino district of Chukotka Autonomous Okrug K.Apalkov. Among the participants were representatives of the administration of Bilibino district.

The speakers made reports on the history of Bilibino NPP, its industrial and economic activities, the prospects for energy supply of the district and the ecological safety of the work to collect, use, treat, transport and store hazardous waste.

Engineer-ecologist N.Guseva pointed out that Bilibino NPP met all natural factors (aero-meteorological, hydrological, ecological). “We believe that the plant’s work to treat hazardous waste complies with all relevant requirements and standards.” As a result, the committee decided to approve the work of Bilibino NPP to collect, use, treat, transport and store hazardous waste.

The managers of the plant said that it was going to further improve its ecological management system and to reduce the effects of its hazardous waste on the environment. They invited independent experts to analyze the results of their work.
