Leningrad NPP is gradually increasing the capacity of its 3rd unit and has stopped its 4th unit

On May 17 2008 at 09:00 PM Leningrad Nuclear Power Plant (branch of Rosenergoatom Concern, Leningrad region) restarted its 3rd unit, stopped on May 15 2008 at 09:02 AM by its automatic protection system. On May 18 at 14:30 the capacity of the unit was raised to 700MW. “On May 19 we started to gradually restore the capacity of the unit. From May 19 till May 21 09:00 AM the unit will work at a capacity of 700MW,” says the head of the Production Department of Leningrad NPP Yuri Nefyodov.
 
On May 18 at noon the 4th unit of the plant was stopped for short-term maintenance (till May 22).

Presently, units 1, 2 and 3 of Leningrad NPP are operating safely at a total capacity of 2,700MW.

To remind, the overhaul and modernization of the 3rd unit was started on July 20 2007. Presently, the plant is preparing for the modernization of the 4th unit.

Since Apr 1 2002 Leningrad Nuclear Power Plant has been a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern.

The plant has four 1,000MW units with RBMK type reactors (graphite-moderated reactors). The lives of the 1st and 2nd units have been extended for 15 years. The lives of the 3rd and 4th units are supposed to be extended for 20 years.

In 2007 Leningrad NPP generated a total of 24.633bln KWh against 23.178bln KWh in 2006. The capacity factor made up 70.3% against 66.2% in 2006. In 2008 the plant is supposed to produce 29.4bln KWh.
