The development of nuclear power engineering is one of the key strategic components of the country’s security, prosperity and welfare.
Presently, LNPP is the leading energy supplier of the North-West, Leningrad region and St. Petersburg. LNPP has RBMK-1000 reactors.
The Federal Target Program “The Development of the Nuclear Power Complex of Russia in 2007–2010 and Till 2015” stipulates the modernization of the existing LNPP units and the prolongation of their service periods. Nevertheless, already now, we should start building substituting capacities.
LNPP-2 will be the central site of the NPP-2006 project — a project based on the best experience of the Soviet and Russian nuclear power engineering. NPP-2006 is a safe and economically expedient project. The capacity of the plant’s WWER reactors will be 1,160 MW, the service period — 60 years. The plant will have 4 units.
Nuclear power engineering is:
— efficient and competitive;
— ecologically safe;
— science-intensive;
and has:
— big experience of NPP construction and operation abroad;
— necessary fuel basis.
LNPP-2 will allow to reduce the technogenic impacts on the region’s ecology, particularly, to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases in line with Russia’s commitments under Kyoto Protocol.
Besides, the project will improve the social situation in the town of Sosnovy Bor.
