Public hearings at LNPP-2

Valentin Mezhevich, First Vice Chairman of Federation Council Committee on Natural Monopolies

On Feb 7 Sosnovy Bor (Leningrad region) will host public hearings of the materials on the ecological impacts of the construction and the operation of LNPP-2. One day before the hearings First Vice Chairman of Committee on Natural Monopolies of the Federation Council Valentin Mezhevich comments on the technical aspects of the project.

Speaking of the importance of LNPP-2 for the development of Leningrad region and St. Petersburg, I would like to note that in XXI no development is possible without electric energy. Under the general ecological situation and the shortage of gas, coal and water capacities in the European part of the Russian Federation, it is inexpedient to develop other energy sources in Leningrad region. So, this project seems to the only source of electricity for the region.

I think that it is high time to build LNPP-2, especially as the neighbors of Leningrad regions don’t have strong energy capacities either and will hardly have in the near future. Consequently, there is no way for the region to export enough energy to cover the energy shortfall that will follow the stoppage of LNPP-1. So, we should start thinking about replacing this source by a new one – about full adequate replacement. The new NPP will certainly do this and will help us to solve the energy problem in the North-Western region.
