A recent report by Georgetown University analysing hundreds of hours of Chinese state television, newspapers and blogs says China’s Nuclear arsenal may be many times larger than previously thought.

The report says China could have as many as 3,000 nuclear warheads, a significant increase from the previously estimated high of 400.

Al Jazeera spoke to Dr. Phillip A Karber, a Georgetown University professor and chief author of the report.

French police battle anti-nuclear activists

French police have battled anti-nuclear protesters as the last train carrying German Nuclear waste treated in France set off on its journey home.

A mobile police canteen was set on fire by demonstrators on Wednesday and at least three people were hurt, two protesters and a riot officer.

UK homes hit by rising energy costs

Energy prices in the UK have increased by twenty per cent in 2011 as wholesale of costs of fuels have gone up.

This has forced an increasing number of homes into fuel poverty, which is currently defined as spending more than ten per cent of household income on fuel.

The number of homes technically in fuel poverty has gone up almost fivefold in the past eight years.

Iran hits back over nuclear report

Iran will not retreat “an iota” from its Nuclear programme and the world is being misled by claims that it is seeking nuclear weapons, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said.

Ahmadinejad was speaking on Wednesday in response to a report from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the UN nuclear watchdog, which alleged that Iran was close to developing a nuclear warhead.

Israel preparing for a nuclear Iran

On Thursday the Israeli army practised evacuations near Tel Aviv. On Wednesday, it test-fired a long-range ballistic missile, its first in three years. And earlier in the week, the military was involved in joint exercises with the Italian air force near Sardinia.

Israel says the timing of these operations is a coincidence, but with the International Atomic Energy Agency about to release a new report on Iran’s Nuclear capabilities next week, some have speculated that Israel may be considering a strike against Iran.

Qantas grounds entire fleet

Qantas Airways has grounded its entire fleet of aircraft over a labour dispute – a move it said would cost more than $20m a day.

The Australian airline said all aircraft would remain grounded indefinitely until unions representing pilots and ground staff reached an agreement with Qantas over pay and work conditions.

Rise of solar panel energy in Bangladesh

Inside Story – The future of nuclear power

Germany’s ruling coalition says it has agreed a date of 2022 for the shutdown of all of its nuclear power plants.
Environment Minister Norbert Rottgen made the announcement today, the BBC reported online.

Chancellor Angela Merkel had set up an ethics panel to look into Nuclear power following the disaster at the Fukushima plant in Japan. Over the weekend, dozens of environmental activists climbed on top of Germany’s landmark Brandenburg Gate demanding a speedy end to the use of atomic Energy.
